About Der Greif #10

Issue #10 of Der Greif marks almost a decade of the organization. There will be events organized coinciding with the release in July 2017. There’s no subject to the submissions. For issue 10, there's an optional submission fee of 5 Euros. Overall concept of the publication is de- and recontextualization of single images, so photographers submitting are aware of stepping back from controlling parts of their work as it might be shown in an entirely new context, placed next to works of photographers and authors of different origins.

What published artists receive

Photographers published in #10 receive great exposure related to activities planned around the publication in July. They receive a free copy plus a voucher for additional copies. From the published artists, a selected number is invited to show their entire series in an Artist-Feature on Der Greif and to take over the Artist-Blog.

About Der Greif

DER GREIF is an award-winning organization for contemporary photography. It is print-publication, online-publication, curatorial team and joint project all at once. The artistic core and root of the project is the ad-free print-publication. It combines and presents the works of photographers and authors of different origins in a holistic piece of art.

The website is exhibition-, communication-, and information-platform for participants and anyone interested in contemporary photography. Participating artists are presented in special artist-features where they are given the opportunity to blog. In »Guest-Room«, outstanding personalities in the field of international photography curate and select their favorite submissions online.

Der Greif connects the digital and the analogue, exploring and expanding the borders and limits of image-distribution and -reception in the digital era. All Der Greif-projects connect virtual, physical and / or print-spaces. Since its inception in 2008, the project is involved with contemporary issues like the changing perception of authorship, de- and recontextualization of images, appropriation, artistic approaches to photographic archives and the rise of the remix culture.

Judging Criteria

Der Greif editors’ take in consideration several aspects when reviewing the submissions. The general approach is about ‘seeing’ rather than ‘judging’. Print-issues of Der Greif are based on de- and recontextualization of single images by combining them. The editors are interested in exploring how a consciously created new context allows certain concepts or details within single images to emerge, whereas others might become less obvious or important. The aim is not to illustrate images or text; rather to find positions and combinations that create an associative picture-as-a-whole.

- When creating image-text combinations, the editors are asking themselves the following questions:
- Does a combination of images work on both a conceptual and aesthetic level?
- Does it create links between the combined works rather than ‘lists’ of images and texts placed next to each other?
